On January 18, 2023 Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association (SenTIA) collaborated with Tohoku Foreign Language & Tourism College, an association supporting member, in a special class session for students and faculty. This was conducted in English so that students in the school’s “Super English Course” could practice English for possible use in their future careers. The association’s staff provided support for the planning and operation of the event.
The class was divided into two parts. In the first half, “Nadeshiko,” which provides experiences for tourists through the “Sendai Experience Program” (operated by our Association), demonstrated “Zunda making” and explained the attraction, history, and food culture of Zunda. It was the first experience for all 8 participating students and faculty to make Zunda. The participants were reminded that Zunda is a true traditional specialty with a history of over 400 years. We hope that students and faculty will transmit Sendai’s culture from within their classrooms to the world.

During the second half of the session, Justin Velgus, a member of the Sendai Convention Bureau (MICE Promotion Section), presented a speech introducing the MICE industry in English. Participants learned the meaning of MICE (Meetings, Incentive, Conventions, Exhibition), its role in the tourism industry, the benefits of attracting large-scale events, as well as the MICE situation in Sendai, such as venue options and role of the Sendai Convention Bureau.
The Sendai Convention Bureau would like to express its gratitude for the opportunity to introduce a Sendai Experience Program operator sharing Sendai’s culture, as well the opportunity to teach and motivate students to think more about the MICE industry and importance of bringing MICE to Sendai.
