The 17th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (17WCEE), which the Sendai Convention Bureau (MICE Promotion Section of the Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association) helped to attract and host, received the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) International Conference Attraction and Hosting Contribution Award for fiscal year 2022.

The award ceremony was held at the 32nd International MICE Expo (IME2023) on February 16, and the certificate was presented to Professor Kimiro Meguro, Director of the Center for Integrated Disaster Information Research, Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies (III), Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies (GSII) at Tokyo University.
Reason for selection (translation from Japanese press release by Sendai Convention Bureau staff):
The host city’s experience and the theme of the conference are well matched. In addition to the regional contribution programs such as MICE ambassadors, support from Sendai City, and high quality lectures for local citizens, measures to deal with unique challenges to a hybrid event, such as time difference measures, the establishment of an extended conference period, and the availability of videos of presentations in the archives after the conference, were highly evaluated. The SDGs initiatives, such as food loss reduction, were highly evaluated as examples that can be easily applied to other conferences and should be used as a model for other conferences. The conference was highly evaluated as a model for other conferences to follow. The decision to switch the format of the conference at an early stage was also highly evaluated as contributing to the high level of the conference.
