On Saturday, November 16, 2024, we held the “2024 International Conference Volunteer Symposium” at Tokyo Electron Hall Miyagi. This year, under the theme of “MICE and SDGs,” the symposium provided an opportunity to consider together the connection between SDGs and hospitality through a hands-on workshop popular at international conferences.
In Part 1, titled “SDGs Initiatives in Sendai and Volunteer Activities,” we shared information about SDGs-related activities and conducted a one-point English lesson focused on practical phrases useful for volunteer activities. Participants learned how to communicate effectively with international conference attendees.
In Part 2, participants experienced the popular workshop “Sustainable Chopstick Making.” Additionally, they crafted chopstick cases using Sendai’s Tanabata Festival washi paper, providing a chance to connect with the local culture while raising awareness about the SDGs.
Participants shared feedback, such as, “It was great to learn practical English. Especially for explaining how to make chopsticks, which can be challenging to do spontaneously,” and “By experiencing the process myself, I understood what aspects were challenging. This will allow me to interact more compassionately during volunteer activities.”
Moving forward, the Sendai Convention Bureau team aims to continue working together to enhance activities that support international conferences in Sendai. We sincerely thank everyone who participated.
